choro

A musical style that is Brazilian through and through

It started to take shape by the end of the 19th century, from the mixture of elements of European Ballroom Dances, such as “schottische”, waltz, minuet, and especially polka, and Portuguese popular music with the influences of African music.

There are several hypotheses about the origin of the term “choro”. It is believed that it is a sentimental, Brazilian style of playing European dances by performing in a weepy manner (choro means colloquially “crying”). The historian and ethnographer Câmara Cascudo sees the relation with “xolo” – a particular custom connected to a dance which was popular amongst African slaves.
